What is iertutil.dll, and why is there a demand to download it
iertutil.dll is a dynamic link library file in the Windows system related to Internet Explorer and some system components, usually located inC:\Windows\System32orC:\Windows\SysWOW64directory. It is not an ordinary file that can be replaced at will; many programs indirectly depend on it when calling system network-related interfaces. When the system prompts "iertutil.dll is missing from your computer" or "This program can't start because iertutil.dll is missing from your computer," users' first reaction is often to search for "iertutil.dll download." This approach is understandable, but the root cause of the problem needs to be clarified first; otherwise, the downloaded file may very likely cause even greater trouble.
As of October 2024, Microsoft has ended official support for Internet Explorer, but iertutil.dll still exists in some versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 because some system components and legacy software still reference it. This file is usually "missing" not because Microsoft deleted it, but because system files are corrupted, antivirus software mistakenly deleted it, or some streamlined systems removed it during creation.

Common risks of directly downloading iertutil.dll
DLL files from unknown sources may be bundled with malicious code
Entering "iertutil.dll download" into a search engine will bring up a large number of third-party DLL download sites. The file versions provided by these websites are chaotic, and some were even extracted from other systems years ago. More seriously, DLL files themselves can be implanted with backdoors or advertising modules. Once you put it into the System32 directory and register it, the malicious code will run when the system starts. In 2023, security teams disclosed a batch of mining Trojans disguised as system DLLs, including a fake iertutil.dll.
Version mismatches will cause more errors
iertutil.dll has a corresponding relationship with the Windows version, system architecture (32-bit or 64-bit), and build number. Copying the file from Windows 7 to Windows 10, or placing a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, may prevent the system from loading properly and can even cause the browser and some system functions to crash completely. Rather than taking the risk of downloading, try the built-in repair methods first.
How to fix a missing iertutil.dll without downloading files
Method 1: Run the System File Checker (SFC)
This is the safest and most recommended approach. Open Command Prompt as administrator, typesfc /scannowand press Enter. The system will automatically scan all protected system files and restore the damaged or missing iertutil.dll from the cache. The whole process takes about 10 to 20 minutes; do not close the window during this time. If SFC reports that it cannot repair the file, you can then runDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, which pulls a healthy copy of the file from the Windows Update servers.
Method 2: Use a system restore point
If you remember the approximate date when the problem appeared, for example, if you installed some software or update around September 15, 2024, you can open "Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore" and choose an earlier point in time to restore. System Restore does not delete personal files, but it will undo recently installed programs and drivers, and in many cases it can directly solve the DLL loss problem.
Method 3: Extract from a system of the same version
If you have another Windows computer with exactly the same version, you can copy iertutil.dll from itsC:\Windows\System32directory to a USB drive, then paste it into the corresponding directory on the faulty computer. Before copying, it is recommended to back up the original file (if it still exists). After copying is complete, runregsvr32 iertutil.dllas administrator to register it. Note that this method is only suitable for emergencies, and you must ensure that both computers have the same system version and patch level.
When should you consider manually downloading
Only consider obtaining iertutil.dll from a trusted source when all of the following conditions are met: neither System File Checker nor DISM can repair it; you have confirmed that the file has indeed been completely deleted and there is no backup; and you are able to extract the corresponding version from Microsoft's official symbol server or a Windows installation image. For ordinary users, the safer choice is to use Windows installation media to perform an "in-place upgrade," which preserves personal files while restoring all system files to a healthy state.
If you still encounter iertutil.dll errors after October 2024, first check whether Internet Explorer-related components have recently been uninstalled. Some versions of Windows 11 allow the removal of IE compatibility components, and after removal some legacy programs will report errors. In this case, re-enabling the "Internet Explorer 11" feature (by checking it in "Turn Windows features on or off") is often more effective than downloading the DLL.
Three reminders before you proceed
Do not download iertutil.dll from forum attachments, cloud drive shares, or so-called "DLL mega packs"; files from these channels almost cannot have their digital signatures verified. Create a system restore point before proceeding, so you leave yourself a way back. If your computer shows multiple missing DLL prompts at the same time, it is highly likely that the system is infected with a virus or the hard drive has bad sectors. You should first run a full antivirus scan and disk check rather than downloading files one by one. Focusing your effort on repairing the overall health of the system is more meaningful than replacing a single iertutil.dll.
